Notes |
- From Patricia Prickett Hickin: "Hannah Bailey Jackson’s brother - the urbane and hospitable Minter Bailey Jr. [1799-1866, m. Sarah Bastable] had owned and operated the Bailey House in Weston-it was probably the most renowned hotel in that part of the state before the Civil War."
Also from Pat Hickin: Cook, History of Old Bailey House, pg 185: "County Court, he [Minter Bailey] applied for a license to keep an ordinary in the Weston Hotel. . . He took charge of hotel [in Weston] run by Thos. Bland, [later known as the Bailey House]. This building fronted Main Street for forty feet. It was two stories high and of log and frame construction.
"Mr. Bailey and his wife were very popular hosts, and their liberality was proverbial: no minister was ever charged for any service and no poor and needy person was ever turned away. . . Major Bailey was a born host, urbane . . . Bailey House became best and most popular hotel in Northwest Virginia."
